FT.com launches new blogs, appoints Bede McCarthy FT.com Executive Editor and Sarah Laitner as Blogs Editor

The Financial Times has announced the launch of new blogs on FT.com, including a G20 blog that will cover the events of this week and ongoing dedicated energy, science and health blogs.

The news follows the success of existing blogs on FT.com which have seen a four-fold increase in page views and unique users over the past 12 months and a growing community making over 18,000 comments per month.

The appointment of Bede McCarthy as Executive Editor of FT.com and Sarah Laitner as Blogs Editor further underline a continued focus on developing the interactive and community elements of the FT.

McCarthy joined the FT in 2007 as a night News Editor on FT.com. Laitner, who was previously Brussels correspondent, will in her new role as Blogs Editor oversee the overall blog output. Both will work closely with FT.com Managing Editor Robert Shrimsley.

Robert Shrimsley said: "Following the success our existing blogs we want to continue to give readers opportunities to comment and engage with our journalists and to share their own expertise with the broader FT community."

Each new blog will have an assigned editor to moderate the insight, comment and analysis posted by Financial Times journalists. The Financial Times will also continue to create blogs in conjunction with editorial exclusives to increase breadth of coverage, such as the Future of Capitalism series and this week’s G20.

The new blogs include:

  • Energy Source blog: Edited by Kate Mackenzie, FT’s newly appointed online energy editor, the Energy Source blog will be written by specialist FT journalists providing insight into energy markets, companies and policies on energy supplies and the environment.
  • Science blog: Edited by FT’s science editor Clive Cookson, this blog covers the latest developments in science, from stem cells to space exploration, global warming, innovation policy, R&D funding and science education.
  • Health blog: A forum for readers who are involved or interested in health, encompassing a host of topics including science, policy, management, technology, business and delivery. The Health blog will complement the FT Health series in print and online.
  • FTfm blog: A dedicated blog providing insight and analysis into the global fund management industry, edited by the FTfm’s specialist writing team and managed by FTfm editor Pauline Skypala.
