Alexandra White, Director of AOP, represented online publishing employers at a conference for students on Monday 24 October, organised by the MediaGuardian.
Rewarding, creative and highly competitive, the media world can be a tough nut to crack for students and young people looking for their first job in the industry. The series of national 'Insight' conferences aim to give students the essential know-how they will need to get their foot in the door.
In response to an identified skills shortage in the market (the 2005 AOP Census found that online publishers are finding it difficult to recruit highly-skilled staff, with 60 per cent of members saying they had unfilled vacancies at the time of the research), White was invited to speak to the students about the relevance of higher education, media qualifications and work experience for getting into the digital publishing industry.
Also on the panel were Marcel Wiel, deputy editor of the Guardian and Observer News Service, and Roger Hammett, head of recruitment communications, BBC.
