Association of online publishers Helping media owners build better digital business

AOP-Mozilla Hack Day 2012 'hack the ad'

AOP is announcing its second hack day, which will run on 11-12th October, in conjunction with the Knight-Mozilla News Technology Parnership, revisiting its collaboration with a UK trade body - a ‘dynamic day of fast-paced real-time software development, an experiment in demonstrating the future of publishing, today.’
The first day, Thursday 11th will take place at Incisive Media, Broadwick Street, it will then be transferred to the AOP’s flagship Summit Digital Publishing Summit, at Westminster Bridge Park Plaza on Friday 12th for final results, judging and prizes awarded.  Full information on the hack day can be found at
AOP is inviting developers, designers and journalists from across the industry to get involved - you can book your place here. The proposed theme for this year is ‘Hack the Ad’: advertising is still by a long way the predominant business model of news organisations, and crucial to supporting the future of journalism online. But is there enough innovation and experimentation in this area from media owners themselves?  The hack day also fits in neatly with the Summit’s theme – 'Unleashing your Inner Start-up': with AOP bringing its diverse membership together to work collaboratively to create prototypes and code which all of its members’ businesses can benefit from. Participants from across AOP’s membership of B2B media owners, consumer magazines, newspapers, broadcasters and digital-only brands will team up for a day of brainstorming & prototype building, with the aim of demonstrating how publishers can take advantage of the open web and encourage their advertser clients in new ways.
Lee Baker, AOP Director says: “The response we received to the collaborative way of working, and the ideas and innovation, that we saw at last year's Hack Day made it a no-brainer to repeat in 2012.” He adds: “AOP is a the organisation for UK media owners, where commercial, editorial and product leaders come together to share knowledge and work collaboratively – with the hack day, we are also directly involving developers, designers and journalists together, and hope the results demonstrate the benefits of our collegiate, cross-industry approach.”
